Emergency Management Warning 2: Positive Case of Vesicular Stomatitis in a Horse in the State of ArizonaThe National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, IA, have confirmed the finding of vesicular stomatitis (VS) in a horse on a premises in Maricopa County, Arizona. This is the first case of VS detected in Arizona in 2005. Arizona had no cases of VS in 2004. The NVSL complement fixation (CF) test results showed that the ill horse had a four-fold increase in antibodies to the New Jersey strain of VS virus in paired sera collected on April 19 and April 27. No VS virus was isolated from this horse. The 5-year old gelding was purchased at auction about 3 weeks prior to the owner noticing "sores" in his mouth on April 16 and eventual sloughing of the dorsal epithelium of the tongue. APHIS Veterinary Services and the Arizona Department of Agriculture will continue to monitor the situation and conduct response activities in an effort to minimize trade restrictions. Please forward this information to your federal, State, and industry counterparts as necessary.
